6:9 When Love and Rules Conflict
Luke's vignettes on Jesus and the Sabbath (see also Luke 13:10-17) demonstrate the legalism Jesus opposed. Jews of his day observed very strict rules governing what could be done on the Sabbath. Religious leaders became furious at Jesus for "breaking" the traditions. His crime? Healing people on the Sabbath. Jesus refused to let traditions interfere with compassion for needy people.

7:19 Even John Questioned
The crowds Jesus attracted wavered between enthusiastic support and outright rejection of him. Evidently, some of the controversy even affected John the Baptist, who had baptized Jesus and pronounced him the Son of God (see John 1:34). John, then in prison, sent his disciples to confirm whether Jesus was the true Messiah. Jesus reassured him with a direct reference to the prophecies of Isaiah 61 (see also Luke 48:21).

8:3 How Did Jesus Support Himself?
In the Middle East of that day, teachers traveled from town to town, accepting the gifts of appreciative listeners. Luke points out that certain women who had been healed by Jesus helped provide for him. In all, Luke introduces 13 women who do not appear in the other Gospels.

9:59 Burying His Father
The man's request to "let me go and bury my father" didn't necessarily mean that the man's father had just died. Possibly the expression was a figure of speech, a way of saying, "Let me wait until my father has died." Jesus instead stressed the urgency of his mission.

10:31 Which One Showed Love?

The priest saw the robbery victim in a half-dead state. According to Old Testament law, a priest who touched a dead body made himself ceremonially impure (Leviticus
