Matthew and Luke recounted the same events without them. But as any good writer knows, details like these make a story come alive. Vivid images that stuck in the eyewitness' memory will likely stick with the reader as well.
For example, Mark could have matter-of-factly told of people being healed, but it just didn't happen that way. A blind man, "throwing his cloak aside . . . jumped to his feet and came to Jesus" (10:50). And after the paralytic stood up, "This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, 'We have never seen anything like this!' " (2:12).
