| 7:13 A Son of Man God's power is given to one, "like a man" rather than to those "like beasts." The contrast suggests God's kingdom has power that is humane, not savage or bestial. Jesus adopted this term for himself. 10:13 Slow to Answer Prayer These comments come from what seem to be an angelic messenger. They hint at heavenly warfare human beings know little about. When prayers go unanswered for long periods, more may be involved than we ever dream. 11:37 Exalted above the Gods The tyrant Antiochus IV, whom most commentators believe is described here, minted many coins showing his portrait. The early coins were merely stamped, "King Antiochus." But, as he grew more obsessed with his own importance, he added features to his portrait that made him look like the Greek gods Apollo or Zeus, and to his "God Manifest." Such behavior earned him the nickname "Antiochus Epimanes" - "crazy Antiochus." 12:2 Resurrection While eternal life is usually portrayed cloudily in the Old Testament, this verse clearly predicts that we will live forever. |
